Old Testament Gospel Doctrine Lesson 7: The Abrahamic Covenant (and how it relates to Adam & to us)

For some reason, even after spending years and years doing the same 45 minute lesson¬†on the Abrahamic Covenant, I always felt like I didn’t quite understand the Abrahamic Covenant. Or, at the least, I couldn’t see how the facts relayed through the lesson manual fit into the rest of the scriptures. I’ve been on a quest for the last few years to figure out, as much as I can, how this covenant relates to other places in scripture that talk about covenants, Abraham, priesthood, and so on.

So, I thought some of you teaching Lesson 7 this Sunday might find it helpful to see how the Abrahamic Covenant fits into the history before Abraham comes along. At least, it’s been very helpful for me, so I’ll share it just in case it’s helpful for anyone else. :)

I see the Abrahamic Covenant as a renewal or a resurrection of promises given to Adam and Eve. Here is are those promises, as I see them:

“Thou Wast Chosen Before Thou Wast Born” – Lesson 2 (Old Testament Manual)

Well, it’s been far, far too long since I last posted here at Feast. And I think I might make a habit again this year of posting somewhat regularly. I was called some months ago as one of several Gospel Doctrine teachers in my ward, and that’s reason enough for me to turn my attention back to things here. I didn’t do any posts on the Doctrine and Covenants simply because the lessons in the manual aren’t conducive to the kind of posts I write. But I think I’d like to use the blog here to air thoughts as I work through material for my Old Testament lessons. As always, my notes aren’t much good for others, I suspect. I don’t mean to provide anything like a lesson plan, but only to work through some of the texts I’m wrestling with as I prepare to teach. I should also apologize that I probably won’t get these notes up with much time to spare before others will be teaching these lessons. I just haven’t the time this year to get these done much in advance of my own responsibilities to teach. And I’ll only be working through notes on the lessons I’ll be teaching (every other lesson during the year), for which I also apologize.

The Nephites were a failure…but when?

Imagine reading the Book of Mormon backwards. Not literally of course, where nothing would make sense, but arranging all the “stories” or segments in reverse-chronological order. This way, instead of starting with a righteous and devoted prophet-king (Nephi), we begin the tale reading about a barbaric, rebellious people who are utterly destroyed. They are wicked and perverse—among the baddest of the bad in all of history—and it isn’t until much later that we find more than a handful of Nephites we would want to emulate.

The question is: At what point would you say, “Here is a model society”?

Or, put another way, knowing that Nephite society is ultimately a horrible failure, at what point did their politics, culture, leadership, etc. essentially doom them to that fate? Read the rest of this entry »

Book of Mormon Lesson #18: “God Himself Shall Redeem His People,” Mosiah 12-17

We are saddled with the task of sorting out the whole of Abinadi’s speech in a single lesson. That’s devastatingly difficult, particularly because Abinadi’s speech marks the—and I mean the—turning point in the history of the Nephites, and in about a dozen ways. We’ve got to look very carefully at those details. That’s all the more difficult, given that the historical setting still needs some serious work, even after last week’s lesson and associated notes, and given that we’ve also got to do some serious theological work on the text as we work through it. There’s too much to be done on Abinadi’s speech.

Book of Mormon Lesson #17: “A Seer Becometh a Great Benefit to His Fellow Beings,” Mosiah 7-11 (Sunday School)

Let’s say that this lesson serves as a kind of bridge between Benjamin and Abinadi. At least, that’s how I want to take it. There’s much to learn as we cross this bridge, but my principal aim will be to set up as well as possible Abinadi’s speech and circumstances. We’ll see why especially in the next lesson.

Book of Mormon Lesson #16: “Ye Shall Be Called the Children of Christ,” Mosiah 4-6 (Sunday School)

In my last post, I worked through Mosiah 1-3, the first “half” of Benjamin’s speech. Now we have the remainder—Mosiah 4-6—to work through. I’ve already commented in my previous post on the fact that Benjamin has taken us, thus far, through a discussion of the creation, then of the fall, and finally of atonement. What follows in the remainder of the speech is very interesting in light of this progression.

But there’s no need to go back to review. Benjamin begins this next part of his speech with a most important review of what he’s already had to say. Let’s take a look at that. Read the rest of this entry »

Book of Mormon Lesson #15: “Eternally Indebted to Your Heavenly Father,” Mosiah 1-3 (Sunday School)

King Benjamin’s speech in two lessons? Well, it’s a bit slower than we’re usually forced to go, but there’s anything but the necessary space here to deal adequately with Benjamin’s pregnant words. In many ways, Benjamin’s sermon is the Sermon on the Mount of the Book of Mormon, the presentation of the hard, practical demands of the gospel of Christ. It’s here that one finds the equation of service to others with service to God, the most overt obliteration of every idea of salvation by works, the divine demand to be like a child, the requirement to see oneself as absolutely nothing and God as everything, the condemnation of those who reject beggars because they brought it on themselves, the unavoidable importance of the covenant, etc. It is here, first and foremost in the Book of Mormon, that the theological rubber meets the road of everyday living. We would do well to pay the closest attention to Benjamin’s words.

Here’s what I want to do is the following:

(1) Deal a bit with the setting of the sermon (drawing in part on the historical work of my last post)
(2) Analyze the opening of Benjamin’s speech—his analysis of kingship and servitude
(3) Work at some length through Benjamin’s discussion of grace
(4) Touch lightly on the presentation of Mosiah as the new king
(5) Say a few words about Benjamin’s warnings against contention, etc.
(6) Tackle very carefully the words Benjamin attributes to an angel: the doctrine of Christ
